Two Bear Cubs: A Miwok Legend from California's Yosemite Valley
Published in Hardcover by Yosemite Assn (October, 1997)
Average review score:

A great California Indian taleAs a fourth grade teacher in California, I have the pleasure of teaching California history. This book is a great retelling of an old Miwok Indian legend set in Yosemite Valley. Locals, Robert and Daniel San Souci write and illustrate a fun story that tells of the formation of El Capitan in Yosemite. It also teaches that each individual, regardless of size can make a difference. At the end of the book is information on the Miwok tribe and a helpful list of related readings and web sites. The students love the book and it is a fun way to present a California tribe's legend.

Very interestingI would like to obtain a copy of this book to read. My surname from my father is the only family with that name in Australia. I did not know alot about it untill I contacted this name on the net.
My fathers parents are Catolyn from Barselona and it is possible that I had relatives in the past go to the US.
It is very interesting from that point of view. Could some one please e-mail me and give me some more information on the background of this name, this valley and this book
Yours sincerly

Valley Forge (Cornerstones of Freedom)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (March, 1995)
Average review score:

The American Army is transformed one winter at Valley ForgeThe "Cornerstones of Freedom" series does an excellent job of providing in depth information about historical events for students in upper elementary or junior high school. "Valley Forge" starts with the American Army avoiding barely avoiding being annihilated at the Battle of Brandywine. In the brutal winter of 1777 the colonial army limped into Valley Forge a disorganized and low on supplies and morale. The two things R. Conrad Stein's book focuses on are the severe conditions the troops faced and how they were transformed into a more professional fighting force. Students will learn about not only the leadership shown by commanding general George Washington, but also the efforts by Nathanael Greene to provide better equipment and Baron Friedrich von Steuben to drill the troops in marching and shooting. The improvement was seen the following year at the Battle of Monmouth. This book is filled with paintings and etchings from the 18th and 19th centuries along with contemporary photographs of the National Park. One of the strengths of this book is that Stein often uses quotations from the ordinary soldiers and military leaders of the American army to flesh out the narrative. I found these quite effective in giving young readers a better sense of what things were like at Valley Forge.

Valley of Darkness
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (10 July, 1986)
Average review score:

A rare find. Worth having! An English language account of the Japanese PEOPLE living under the strain and horrors of wartime is indeed something worth having for anyone interested in the subject of World War II. Havens's prose brims with an enthusiasm for his subject. It is a well-researched book - the only drawback being that the photo reproductions are a bit blurry (at least in my copy) and do not offer a very compelling contribution to this otherwise engaging read. Let's hope this book is available again soon.

The Valley of Dying Stars: A Mark Christian Detective Novel
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (May, 2003)
Average review score:

Awesome read! The fast-paced action makes it a great summer read, but this book so much more than that! The author shares many incredible, fresh insights through his main character that are keepers and that I have applied to my own life. You'll find many a clue to personal enrichment and a more exciting free life! The scenes in the country are pure poetry, prozac for the soul, and the one's in the city are exciting, raw, and unbelievably real. You'll fall in love with this PI's life and girlfriend and surroundings. Don't miss out on this mystery!
Fiction never felt so realThe hero in this story is finely drawn, a carefully crafted jewel of contradictions. He has the toughness, courage and principles of Robert B. Parker's Spencer, but is ultimately more complex and conflicted. The story is moving and unforgettable with something for everyone: romance, searing, heart-stopping action, and an engaging mystery that has a shocking, surprise ending. But, what is also fantastic, is its basis in reality. Anyone who has worked in the inner city knows that the horrible places he writes about actually exist.

Valley of Grass: Tall Grass Prairie and Parkland of the Red River Valley
Published in Paperback by North Star Press of St. Cloud, Inc. (March, 1999)
Average review score:

All you ever wanted to know and more about tallgrass prairieThis book, which won the 1999 Minnesota Book Award in the "nature" category, is a literate and thoroughly readable description of the history and current state of tallgrass prairie in Minnesota and North Dakota. In addition to talking about the prairie as it was, and identifying the places where pieces remain, the book talks with and about preserationist farmers and landowners. I was fascinated and rewarded when I read the book.
